In recent weeks the Eastlands side have been linked repeatedly with Dani Alves and Gregory van der Wiel, well now our media colleagues at talksport are claiming that Roberto Mancini is lining up a Summer move for German Andreas Beck.
Beck joined the youth ranks at Stuttgart in 2000 at 13 years old and learnt his trade at that level, he broke into the reserve side 5 years later. He never really became a regular for the Stuttgart first 11, during the 07-08 season he managed 18 appearances and then at the end of that season he moved to fellow Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. He has been a regular at his new club for three seasons and is now attracting interest from numerous other sides.
Beck has become incredibly highly sought after and City could have a real battle on their hands to bring him to the Premier League, there is long term interest from Juventus, and Spanish giants Real Madrid, there is also thought to be other clubs in Germany monitoring him, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund amongst others. It is believed that his club will listen to offers around the £5million mark.
I know you are all thinking that for a player so highly regarded that is a ridiculously low price, and I entirely agree. However the player is only contracted until Summer 2012, and it is believed that Hoffenheim would sooner sell him at a cut price now as opposed to losing him for nothing next year.
Manchester City have a surprisingly good defensive record in domestic football this season, however all is not as well as it seems, they tend to be a bit shaky at the back and I feel a times the backline is relying on some elements of luck. The strange thing for me however is that the right back area is a place where they are relatively strong, Micah Richards is re-finding his form and Pablo Zabaleta despite some flaws in his game works tirelessly and has been a top performer this season. It is the left back region where the side is in dire need of improvement.
Whether they can beat the competition for Beck remains to be seen, I think a lot will depend on whether they are in the Champions League next season or not, but in my mind it feels unnecessary. It has become clear though that for whatever reason City boss Roberto Mancini has decided he needs a new right back, and he could do a lot worse than Beck.
