Man Utd must prove that they can attract top talent

It’s clear that Man Utd need a rebuild this summer. The Red Devils have been struggling for far too long, and whilst poor management must be considered, the fact of the matter is that the personnel that’s at Old Trafford just isn’t good enough.

Beyond a couple of good performers, there a number of players that wouldn’t get close to the starting elevens of teams like Man City or Liverpool – and that isn’t befitting of a club like Man Utd.

From that perspective, then, bringing in new talent with a view to improving the quality within the team must be the priority. However, in doing so, the Red Devils will also shake off another major concern – a concern of temptation.

Specifically, are Man Utd still the same team that they were even a few years ago? When they signed Paul Pogba, that was a sign that they were back in business, with one of Europe’s brightest talents deciding to move to Old Trafford in spite of their recent struggles. Would that still happen today, especially without his obvious prior Man Utd connections? Well, that’s what the club will find out this summer.

Paul Merson has raised a similar point this week, in which he questioned, during a stint for Sky Sports, whether he’d opt to join Man Utd over another big team – given their lack of competitiveness.

“In my opinion Manchester United are the biggest club in the world, but if they came in for me and I was a top drawer player but I could go other places, I would seriously be looking and thinking: ‘Would I want to come here? Are we ever going to get near City or Liverpool?”

This is, of course, a reaction to their poor form this season, with the Red Devils not really competitive home or away, in Europe or in the Premier League.

In truth, at present all Man Utd have on their side at present is their history. They’re still one of Europe’s biggest teams, but they’re no longer one of Man Utd’s best. So why would top talents move to the club?

Well, according to the Evening Standard, Man Utd are looking at bringing in both Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes – two of Europe’s brightest young talents – this summer, with the club looking to revamp the team.

There’s no doubting that bringing both players in would serve to improve the team, but if they do join, that should give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a lot of confidence. It would prove that they’re still an attractive option for top players, and knowing that would make their rebuilding plan a whole lot easier.

it’s a crucial summer for Man Utd in a lot of ways, and if their form has reduced their attractiveness, they could be in big trouble.
