With the epic rise of Declan Rice over the last 18 months or so, it was always going to be difficult for West Ham United to avoid the talk about his future, however, it appears Manuel Pellegrini may have thrown it into doubt with some of his latest comments.
The England international has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League recently with his performances and it seems his manager has made some remarks that will have concerned fans in the process.
What’s the News?
Pellegrini has admitted that Rice could be sold if West Ham’s valuation is met, with price always being the main factor.
“In that case, as always, it is just a matter of price,” he is quoted as saying by Football.London. “There are big teams who decide to pay an important amount of money, sure if it is a good deal for the club and the player and improves his career then we can do it. But I don’t know nothing about that yet.”
Although Pellegrini’s remarks may be rather refreshing in terms of what power the club has regarding Rice, the comments may come somewhat as concerning for those at the London Stadium.
The 20-year-old has been a standout for the Hammers this season and has turned into a key figure within the first-team by grabbing the opportunities handed to him with both hands, including at the international level.
The interest from some of England’s top clubs really does not come as a surprise, as he was always going to turn heads with his magnificent performances and make a number of teams want to add him to their squads in the future.
There will be a concern that the Irons could look to cash in on him in a season or two as the club could see the opportunity to earn a huge amount of money from him, with a potential transfer figure higher than any they have received before.
However, what West Ham will know is that they hold the cards regarding Rice after they managed to tie him down to a long-term contract earlier in the campaign and might just remain stubborn enough to keep him.
Whilst every player may have his price, the Hammers will be in a position to demand whatever they want for the talented youngster, which could see him remain at the London Stadium for a long time to come.
West Ham fans, what do you make of Pellegrini’s comments? Are they anything to be concerned by or is he just being honest about the situation? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
