The West Ham United fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to believe that David Moyes’s time at the club has reached its conclusion despite the fact he steered the club to safety this season.
David Moyes managed to achieve the club’s ultimate objective of securing their Premier League status this season without too much trouble in the end, but it appears he will not be rewarded for his contribution with a new contract this summer. According to reports in The Daily Mail, the Hammers met with Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Foncesa on Monday to discuss the possibility of convincing him to take over at the London Stadium.
The report also claims that Manuel Pellegrini is the running for the West Ham job, so it’s clear that the hierarchy at West Ham are showing plenty of ambition with regards to their next appointment. Pellegrini is currently managing Hebei China Fortune in the Chinese Super League on an extremely lucrative wage, so it will be difficult for West Ham to compete with that level of financial backing.
However, the lure of a return to the Premier League could be enough to convince Pellegrini to take a pay cut and return to England this summer, and if that proves to be the case he should raid his former club Manchester City for Fabian Delph (valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt). Although Delph is typically a central-midfield player, he has spent the vast majority of the season at left-back whilst deputising for Benjamin Mendy, but the return of the French international should force him back into his natural position next season.
City are not overwhelmed with options in midfield, but with the likes of Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan all competing for a starting berth, it seems unlikely that Delph will be able to hold down a regular spot in Guardiola’s starting eleven next season, so he could be tempted by a move away from the Etihad. Meanwhile at West Ham, Moyes has been strapped for options in midfield this season and they are crying out for the arrival of a quality centre-midfielder.
The Irons cannot continue to rely on their loyal servant Mark Noble to provide energy, determination and creativity in midfield, so Pellegrini should raid his former club for Delph this summer if he eventually takes over in East-London.
