Marco Silva could add experienced Gary Cahil following Daniele Rugani’s arrival at Chelsea

Everton are yet to make their first move into the transfer market this summer, but speculation is beginning to increase as the clock ticks closer to the deadline for Marco Silva.

The transfer window is an extremely complicated time as club’s are forced to juggle the needs and wants of the manager with the resources that are available. It’s unclear which positions Silva is most keen to strengthen in, but it seems incredibly likely that he will seek to bolster his attacking options before the window reaches its conclusion.

However, the Toffees are also in desperate need of reinforcements in defence, and recent reports from the London Evening Standard suggest that an ideal target is available for a summer transfer.

According to the report, Chelsea are to complete the signing of Daniele Rugani for £44.2 million, with the Italian signing a 5-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Rugani’s arrival at Chelsea will be Maurizio Sarri’s 2nd major transfer since taking over at the club as he bids to stamp his own personal mark on the squad, and his recent splurge has effectively paved the way for Gary Cahil to embark on a new challenge.

With the likes of Rugani, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, David Luiz and even Kurt Zouma residing with the squad, Cahil will find himself surplus to requirements and available for purchase from another Premier League club.

If that assessment does indeed prove to be the case, Silva should be on hand to add an experienced defender to his ranks this summer.

Whilst he is not blessed with pace, Cahil is a reliable centre-back with a strong positional sense and winning mentality.

Ashley Williams’ defensive frailties were exposed last season in a manner which suggested he is well below the level that is expected at Everton, so Cahil should be brought in to replace him before the season gets underway.

Considering Cahil is 32-years-old and has just one year remaining on his current deal, Silva should be able to snap him up at a bargain price once the arrival of Rugani has been made official.
