The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to a new era under Marco Silva which they hope will be characterised by attractive, possession-based football.
After spending months calling for Sam Allardyce’s departure, the resident Toffees lining up our bar were finally granted their ultimate wish last month as the former England boss made way for Marco Silva. Silva joins the club after more than 6 months of speculation linking him with a move to Goodison Park which ultimately resulted in his dismissal from his previous job at Watford.
If the Portuguese manager takes a quick look at Allardyce’s time with the club he should be able to fathom the enormity of the expectation which the Everton supporters have for their club, so he must take this on board and be equally meticulous and ambitious when identifying his transfer targets this summer.
One thing has become glaringly apparent from Everton’s previous campaign: further reinforcements are needed in attacking positions to boost their creativity in the final-third. The signings of Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun in January enabled Everton to increase their potency moving forward, but they remain short of both the depth and quality that will be required to ensure they push for Europa League football next season.
With that in mind, Silva should make a bid to sign Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri this summer to add a player of true quality to his ranks. According to the Swiss newspaper Aargauer Zeitung (via Stoke Sentinel), Shaqiri has publicly expressed his desire to move to a Premier League club this summer as he believes it is the “best league with the best players”.
Shaqiri’s admission suggests Everton have a perfect opportunity to sign a fantastic player with proven experience in the Premier League at a cut-price following Stoke’s relegation to the Championship. Despite the Potters woes last season, Shaqiri still managed to notch 8 goals and provide 7 assists from 36 appearances in the Premier League to spare the club’s blushes as they would have been cut well-adrift at the bottom of the table without him.
Silva can set the tone for a vastly improved campaign by playing his cards right this summer, so he should begin his reign with a masterstroke signing of a player who will undoubtedly be sought-after throughout Europe in the coming weeks.
