The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a vastly improved campaign under Marco Silva following their disappointing season under three different managers, and recent reports suggest the Portuguese man is planning on laying significant foundations for the future of the club.
According to a recent report from the Daily Telegraph, Everton are interested in bringing both Gelson Martins and Matthijs de Ligt to the club this summer in deals which would undoubtedly transform the Toffees. The latter is 18-years-old and one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe, so it’s extremely unlikely that Everton will be successful in their pursuit, however, the former might just be tempted into a move to Merseyside.
Martins was in sensational form for Sporting Lisbon last season as he bagged 13 goals and provided 13 assists from 52 appearances in all-competitions whilst predominantly operating on the right-side of midfield. The 23-year-old trickster is full of pace and creative ideas in the final-third, and his arrival would undoubtedly inject a level of quality into Everton’s attack which would get the supporters out of their seats at Goodison Park next season.
The report claims that Martins is attempting to end his contract with the Portuguese giants amid an ongoing crisis at the club, and if he is successful he will be available to sign on a free transfer. The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have all expressed an interest in his services, but Silva must fend off competition from elsewhere in order to stamp his personal mark on the club and set a new standard for the future.
One of the main grievances from the Everton supporters last season was not necessarily their league position or the consistency of results under Allardyce, but rather the style of football which was implemented at the club: defensive, drab, uninspiring and regressive. However, the arrival of a player of Martins natural attacking quality would inject excitement back into their play and set a benchmark for the club to strive towards during the years to come.
Naturally, the supporters will also want to see an improvement in their results, but the new standard at Everton needs to revolve around progressive attacking football. Marco Silva seems to be an ideal candidate to implement that philosophy, and bringing his 23-year-old compatriot to Everton would certainly represent a watershed moment in the new era which is beginning to take shape for the club.
