Manchester City have not had it all their own way in the summer transfer window so far, and a recent report from Tuttosport (via City Watch) suggests that they could be set for another transfer blow after losing out on Jorginho.

The Italy international's decision to make a last minute u-turn and join Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea undoubtedly represented the club's biggest blow this year, topping the disappointment of missing out on Alexis Sanchez.

However, the Italian media outlet believe that Inter Milan are lining up a move for Ilkay Gundogan in a deal which could be worth £35.6 million.

Considering Pep Guardiola is already light on options in central midfield, a deal which saw Gundogan swap Manchester for Milan would undoubtedly be a massive blow for the club ahead of the new season, unless they could sign a superior replacement of course.

The player in question is no other than Paris Saint-Germain's midfield maestro Marco Verratti.

Valued at £63 million by Transfermarkt, there is absolutely no doubt that Man City would have to stump up an extortionate transfer fee to acquire his services but, on the evidence of his performances for the French giants in recent seasons, it would be a price well worth paying.

From deep in PSG's midfield Verratti has consistently pulled the strings and provided the foundation for their dominance in Ligue 1, and the quality of his performances have certainly been a level above what Gundogan has provided for Man City.

The prospect of working under a manager of Pep Guardiola's expertise for a club whom, like PSG, are attempting to upset the status quo of the heavyweight elite in European football, should certainly carry a huge weight of appeal for the Italy international.

The above infographic does not depict Verratti in the most positive light, but it's crucial to point out that he is not the type of midfielder to arrive late in the penalty area and find the back of the net, far from it.

What Verratti will provide is a willingness to sit deep in midfield, break up play and distribute the ball with attacking intent into promising areas, so there's no doubt that he could provide Guardiola with a perfect long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Losing Gundogan to Inter Milan is certainly not what City had in mind this summer, but if they are able to replace him with Verratti there's no doubt he would rapidly become a distant memory at the Etihad Stadium.
