Marcos Alonso’s days at Chelsea could be numbered if Conte lands this £13.5m-rated defender

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t convinced by the long-term prospects of Marcos Alonso at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard has been excellent offensively for the Blues, but his defensive deficiencies are clear – and that’s a worry.

He certainly has a role to play, but Antonio Conte was watching on as he was exposed against Barcelona last week, and so Conte must be thinking about bringing in another option. Emerson Palmieri doesn’t seem to be getting a look in, but he’s only just joined, and so you can’t imagine that the Blues will be looking to move him on anytime soon.

Ahead of the summer, then, Chelsea should at least consider bringing in another option, and our landlord thinks that Man Utd defender Luke Shaw could be the perfect option.

The Englishman, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, has had a tough time of it at Old Trafford, but his quality is clear for all to see. He provides fantastic quality down the left-hand side of the defence, offering brilliant pace, technique, dribbling and tackling.

When he burst onto the scene as a teenager, he proved his quality. Over the last 4 or 5 years, he hasn’t got any worse – regardless of what Jose Mourinho tries to say.

Significantly, he’s also just 22-years-old, and so there is still more than enough time for him to continue his development and reach his potential. Not to mention, as a player developed on home turf, Shaw would represent a vital example of a homegrown talent – which is something that Chelsea are lacking at present.

The BBC are reporting that Shaw is set to leave Old Trafford this summer, and so Chelsea should certainly look to pounce. If anyone can turn him around, it’s Antonio Conte. The Blues are apparently interested, at least according to the Daily Mail, and so a move makes perfect sense. If he does join, however, Alonso could be facing the exit door.
