Southampton are on a bad run of form in the Premier League at the moment, having won just one of their first seven matches.
The Saints will travel to Goodison Park to play against Everton in the League Cup on Tuesday night and Mark Hughes has urged his players to make the most of their opportunity.
The manager is expected to make a number of changes to the side and has admitted that there is a chance that if they impress, they could have a place in the side when they return to league action.
“I think so,” he told the Daily Echo.
“Clearly we haven’t won as many games as we wanted to up until this point I would feel.
“If there is an opportunity and there is a feeling that the team can be improved because somebody has shown good endeavour and desire to get back into the team then I will consider that.”
The likes of Angus Gunn, Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, Matt Targett, Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Manolo Gabbiadini are all expected to get their chance on Tuesday night.
Southampton’s performances will need to drastically improve in the Premier League and the game in the League Cup could give them a chance to make start doing so.
Hughes could look to use the game against Everton as a fresh start and to be able to take a closer look at some of the players who have become fringe men at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Almost all of the players that could have the chance to play were regulars last season, whether it be at Southampton or at previous clubs and they should all be keen to grab this opportunity with both hands.
