Mark Hughes needs to raid Leeds United this month to keep Stoke City in the Premier League

Stoke City are suffering a nightmare season, with long-serving boss Mark Hughes struggling to address his side’s woes as the Potters edge closer to the drop.

Fans from the Potteries aren’t a regular occurrence at The Transfer Tavern, but this week our landlord managed to catch up with a few over a cheeky game of pool on the lunchtime shift, with talk quickly turning to the club’s demise this season. Stoke have established themselves as Premier League stalwarts in recent years, but for the first time, it looks like the club could become embroiled in a relegation battle.

In the bottom-three on goal difference heading into the FA Cup third round weekend, the distraction will come as a timely boost to Hughes and his squad, with a tie at League Two Coventry likely to provide Hughes with a morale-boosting win in the West Midlands. Stoke fans were happy with how their side are doing going forward, although more goals are always welcome, but are seriously concerned by their side’s discipline at the back. A mammoth forty-seven goals conceded at a rate of more than two per game has seen the Potters slide down the table, and this is an issue that must be addressed in the new year.

Hughes needs a boost, and our landlord couldn’t help but suggest a bid for Leeds United man, Pontus Jansson. The Swede has been sensational since moving to the Championship side several years ago, and looks prepared to compete in the Premier League. The 26-year-old is in the Swedish squad, but currently not considered a starter, and could look to force through a top-flight move to boost his chances of a starting spot ahead of the World Cup in Russia this summer.

If Hughes can convince Leeds to part with their star man, he will be adding a player capable of making a significant difference at The Bet365 Stadium in the second-half of the campaign.

Stoke fans, would Jansson slot straight into the starting XI? Let us know!
