Stoke City supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been expressing their messages of good luck as Glenn Whelan has departed to join Aston Villa.
Potters legend, Glenn Whelan, has left the club following ten seasons at Stoke City.
During that time, he made a staggering total of 338 appearances scoring a total of eight goals.
The Irishman has joined Steve Bruce at Aston Villa, as the Villains hope to regain their Premier League status.
As the 33-year-old departs, our landlord has highlighted a replacement that Hughes should look to sign.
Glenn Whelan was used rather frequently for Stoke the last term, making 30 Premier League appearances, 26 of which were starts.
Accordingly, Mark Hughes requires a player that can provide the same degree of experience and solidity.
Cardiff City’s Aron Gunnarsson could prove to be the perfect fit.
The 28-year-old is vastly experienced having made 395 club outings, in addition to earning 71 international caps for Iceland.
He’s played 238 games for the Bluebirds, and he attained Premier League experience in the 2013/14 season.
Perhaps this is the most appropriate time for the Icelandic international to relocate.
Gunnarsson is a no-nonsense midfielder who can dictate proceedings at the heart of the field.
He’s extremely physical and demonstrates the ability to win aerial battles on a regular basis.
His concentration is superb, and he does display a stunning ability to score and pass the ball from long-distances.
He may not appear to be the most obvious choice. Nonetheless, our landlord believes he would be a stellar addition to Mark Hughes’ side.
