The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are becoming concerned by their club’s lack of activity during the January transfer window so far.
Rafa Benitez’s side are currently sat perilously close to the relegation zone in 15th place, just 1 point clear from safety. The bottom half of the table is extremely congested and there is hardly anything to separate the sides from Watford in 10th place to Swansea City in 20th. As the season continues to progress some gaps between the sides will inevitably begin to open up, and The Toon Army propping up the bar in the tavern are desperately hoping that Benitez will steer them in the right direction towards the top of the table when this happens.
However, the supporters are worried that this will not be possible without the acquisition of new talent by the end of the month.
Newcastle are yet to bring anybody (at the time of writing, though the Kenedy deal looks close) to the club this month despite the obvious limitations within their squad.
But that could be all set to change very shortly, as according to The Sun, Benitez is lining up a shock-move for Borussia Dortmund employee and former Chelsea star Andre Schurrle (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) this month.
Considering that Newcastle have been lacking a clinical edge in the final-third all season, a move for Schurrle could be exactly what they need to improve their potency up front and consequently boost their hopes of survival.
The German international has missed the vast majority of the season through injury, and as a result, he has only made 2 starts for Dortmund, but the fact he completed 90 minutes for the first time this season on Saturday suggests he may have turned a corner in his recovery.
His past experience in the English top-flight means Benitez should have no concerns regarding his ability to adapt, so the Spaniard should do everything he can to bring the versatile attacking midfielder to Tyneside before the January window slams shut.
