Javier Mascherano has been linked with a move away from Liverpool practically all summer. A few weeks ago it seemed Inter Milan was his definite destination. Now, however, Barcelona could be the club he leaves Anfield for.
It seems a certainty that Mascherano will be gone by the end of the transfer window. He’s made it clear he isn’t happy at Liverpool anymore. Roy Hodgson could do with the funds from his sale to rebuild the squad into the shape he’d like. And despite what Hodgson says, Christian Poulsen is a ready-made replacement for the Argentine. It’s no secret that Mascherano is close to Barca’s Lionel Messi. And apparently Messi has been trying to convince his buddy to make the move to the Nou Camp. Recently Messi said: “He (Mascherano) would be a great boost to Barca. He has the quality to play for Barcelona and the character to fit perfectly into the team.” Messi’s team-mate Andres Iniesta has also been chipping in, saying: “It is no secret we would like Mascherano in Barcelona with us.”
Barcelona would make more sense to me. His first language is Spanish, he has a number of friends there already and Barca need some steel in their midfield having sold Yaya Toure to Manchester City. But are they willing to put up the money? Cesc Fabregas has stayed at Arsenal this season because Barcelona didn’t want to (some would say couldn’t) meet Arsenal’s valuation of their skipper.
Inter will surely still be interested, and they do have the odd £25m laying around from the Balotelli sale.
I’m sure if neither Inter nor Barcelona put up the money then Man City will take him and give him a nice office job.
