West Brom supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side upset the odds by beating Liverpool 3-2 in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening, in turn extending their unbeaten run to four matches.
Alan Pardew’s men earned their spot in the last 32 of the world’s oldest club competition courtesy of a 2-0 success over League Two high-flyers Exeter City earlier this month, thus already going a step further than they did last season. And the Baggies reached round five for just the third time in the last eight years on Saturday as a Jay Rodriguez brace as well as an own goal from Joel Matip helped them on their way to a huge win over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who had taken the lead through Roberto Firmino and pulled one back through Mohamed Salah but were ultimately unable to find an equaliser against Pardew’s resilient side.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Baggies fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they may be about to receive some more good news if a recent report from The Guardian is anything to go by, which suggests that the club are close to securing a deal for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.
The 28-year-old has struggled for regular football at Anfield ever since Jurgen Klopp took over as manager back in 2015, but this season is of particular importance given there is a World Cup to come in the summer.
But with just five Premier League starts to his name so far, it’s not looking good for the England star on Merseyside, and as such his future has been subject of speculation in the last few months with Inter Milan and a whole host of English clubs reportedly keen on the forward.
Yet recent reports suggest that it is West Brom who are in pole position to land Sturridge on loan for the rest of the campaign, a deal which will reportedly see them pay the Reds a £1.5 million loan fee.
And with the Baggies in dire need of goals in the second half of the season to avoid the drop, our resident West Brom fans are sincerely hoping that a deal will indeed be completed by Wednesday’s 11pm deadline.
Landlord’s verdict: Daniel Sturridge has found things tricky at Liverpool ever since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager back in October 2015, but with a World Cup to come this summer, he really needs regular football to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
But that hasn’t happened at Anfield so far this term with just five Premier League starts to show for his efforts, plunging into doubt his short-term future at the club as the January window enters its last knockings.
And it is West Brom who are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for the 28-year-old to move on loan for the rest of the campaign, in what is sure to be a huge boost to manager Alan Pardew and indeed the club’s supporters.
But whether a deal is indeed concluded by Wednesday’s 11pm deadline remains to be seen.
