The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern simply cannot help but wax lyrical about the performances of the infectious Mo Salah, and they were eager to heap further praise on him this week after he was credited with the PFA Player of the Year award.
The Electric Egyptian has taken the Premier League by storm this season on his return to a division where he previously failed to make an impact at Chelsea. His rise to become one of the hottest talents in European football has been both rapid and riveting, and there’s no doubt that Liverpool will have a tough task on their hands trying to fend off interest from rival clubs for his signature this summer.
In the modern game it’s something of a rarity for a player to score more than 40 goals on their debut season for a club, so it’s no surprise that Barcelona are reportedly interested in making their second high-profile raid on the Reds during 2018 when the summer window reopens for business. According to reports from Diario Gol, the Catalan giants want to bring Salah to the Nou Camp this summer in a swap deal involving Ousmane Dembele.
The 20-year-old French international is widely regarded as one of the most promising attacking talents in world football right now, and the fact Barcelona paid an astronomical £103 million fee to sign him from Borussia Dortmund last summer speaks volumes about his reputation.
However, regardless of Dembele’s scope for improvement, any deal which involves Salah departing Anfield this summer is one which Liverpool simply cannot afford to authorise if they wish to challenge for honours next season. To put it into context, Dembele has scored just 1 goal from 13 appearances in La Liga this season whilst Salah has netted on 31 occasions from 31 appearances in the Premier League.
The comparison speaks for itself, so there’s no doubt Liverpool would be left to feel shortchanged if they agreed a swap deal with Barcelona.
Salah is quite simply Liverpool’s most important player. He is their match-winner, top-goalscorer and constant source of creativity, so Klopp must do everything in his power to convince Salah to continue his career on Merseyside next season to give Liverpool every chance of going head-to-head with Manchester City for the Premier League title.
