The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club can secure the services of Anthony Martial this summer in order to bolster their attacking options, although they may be forced to include Toby Alderweireld as part of the deal.
The second-striker conundrum at Tottenham is one which has troubled the club in recent seasons as the likes of Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have struggled to play the role of Harry Kane’s understudy, however, recent reports from The London Evening Standard suggest Mauricio Pochettino has identified a solution.
According to the report, Pochettino is hoping to secure the services of Anthony Martial in order to solve a nagging club problem, as his versatility to operate in a number of attacking roles is particularly appealing to Tottenham’s manager. Signing Martial from Manchester United will undoubtedly be a difficult transfer to negotiate, but if the club are willing to be pragmatic and include Toby Alderweireld as part of a sensational swap deal then they might just secure his services.
Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from North London in recent months due to his refusal to extend his current deal which expires in 2019, so he should be interested in a transfer to Manchester United – a club who can offer him both Champions League football and lucrative wages.
At first glance the Lilywhites faithful are likely to be concerned by the proposed transfer, but the long-term implications of a swap deal would be extremely positive for the club.
Although Martial has yet to prove his quality on a consistent basis for United, there’s no doubt that he possesses an immense level of potential which is simply waiting to be unearthed, and under Pochettino’s guidance he would be well-placed to finally blossom into the world beater he has been widely tipped to become.
On the other hand, Tottenham have coped remarkably well in Alderweireld’s absence this season with Davinson Sanchez in his place, so the loss of the Belgium international may not be the cataclysmic disaster the supporters might have predicted this time last year.
Players come and go at a rate which is almost impossible to keep track of in English football, but having the opportunity to sign a player of Martial’s calibre doesn’t come around too often, so Spurs must take a gamble by using Alderweireld in a swap deal for his services in order to boost their long-term aspirations of winning the Premier League title.
