The Chelsea supporters in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to finish above at least one of the Manchester clubs this season.
As the Premier League moves towards the half-way stage of the season, it is time for teams throughout the Premier League to alter their objectives for the season depending on their progress so far. At the beginning of the season, Antonio Conte would have been targeting a second Premier League title in as many seasons, but his dreams of retaining Chelsea’s crown have been left in a cloud of dust by Manchester City’s blistering start.
Although none of the managers in the chasing pack will be willing to admit defeat just yet, Conte will need to be realistic and make a 2nd place finish their priority this season.
Chelsea’s job of finishing above United could have been considerably easier if they had decided against selling Nemanja Matic to The Red Devils in the summer.
And according to reports in The Daily Mail, United are interested in raiding Chelsea once again with the purchase of their Brazilian star Willian.
The style of Willian’s play is well-suited to Mourinho’s demanding expectations of his forward players to work back and contribute to the team’s defensive shape, so it is no surprise to hear that he is interested in working with him once again.
But Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic in the same direction last summer has already proven to be a severe error of judgement by the club’s hierarchy who authorised the transfer.
If The Blues wish to finish above their Premier League rivals this season, they simply cannot afford to make another cataclysmic error in the transfer window and give United another major leg-up this season.
Chelsea would be beyond foolish to make the same mistake twice, so they must refuse the advances of United and do everything in their power to keep Willian happy in the capital.
