Amid an influx of healthy financial investment, Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of the new kids on the block in the Premier League and they have attracted plenty of interest following their brilliant opening to the new season.
That Wolves currently sit two points ahead of Manchester United and just three points shy of a place in the top-four suggests that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are here to stay.
A near full scale revolution has taken place at Molineux since Wolves were taken over by Chinese investors in July 2016, with a Portuguese theme running at the heart of it.
With Nuno Espirito Santo in charge as manager and the notorious Jorge Mendes working his magic behind the scenes to bring immensely talented players such as Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho to the club, plenty of players have lost their place to new signings in the past two seasons.
But during a rapid transformation in personnel, Matt Doherty has managed to maintain his place in the side.
Doherty is not renowned for his goal-scoring prowess, but he proved that he has goals in his locker by scoring the winner at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
And the Republic of Ireland international paid tribute to Nuno Espirito Santo for sticking by him in the aftermath of proceedings (via The Guardian).
“A lot of managers, new owners, they could have just wiped me out and said we are going with someone new but I have got my head down. I’ve played well when I have needed to and I am still here, so long may it continue.”
In a side which is littered with new faces it is refreshing to see Doherty thriving and enjoying his football.
His admission that he could easily have been cast aside is absolutely spot on and he should certainly take Santo’s decision to stick by him as a huge compliment to his ability.
Wolves certainly have the resources to replace Doherty if the level of his performance drops over the course of the season, but the faith Nuno has shown in him so far suggests that he has firmly cemented his place in the starting eleven.
