Liverpool are, at present, still in good shape in pursuit of the Premier League title. They’re currently second in the table, but they have a game in hand over Man City, and so the race is still in their hands.
They’ve played brilliantly all season long, and Jurgen Klopp’s men deserve a lot of credit for everything they’ve achieved.
Discussing the title race, the Sky Sports pundit said: ‘The strength of their [Man City’s] squad is going to be the deciding factor for me. The fact they can change their team and it is still so strong with not a problem. Liverpool don’t have the same options, especially with Champions League coming up soon.’
‘If they suffer more injuries Liverpool will be stretched. Henderson playing right-back I think was regretful as well as letting Clyne go. If any of the front three pick up knocks then the players coming in will not quite be the same standard’, he continued.
One thing that Man City do have is a lot of depth. The Citizens have spent big over the last few years on fresh talent, and much of that has been in the form of depth. For example, Riyad Mahrez has played less than 10 minutes in the league in 2019, and that speaks volumes of the quality on display at the Etihad.
Liverpool, meanwhile, don’t have that luxury. They’ve got perhaps the best starting eleven in the Premier League, but beyond that, their options are seriously limited. For example, losing van Dijk would mean that the Reds have to pick between Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren, and they’re well below par.
Man City have their own issues in this regard, to be fair, especially if you consider the lack of depth beyond Fernandinho in the midfield, but their concerns are certainly less severe.
This could certainly have a big impact over the course of the season, especially if the Reds continue to progress on multiple fronts. Klopp, though, has already started rotating, and so perhaps he more prepared than Le Tissier is giving him credit for.
