It is not just teams at the summit of English football who seem interested in Southampton's players.

According to Sky Sports, recently relegated Fulham are keen on signing Matt Targett from the south coast club, with the 23-year-old impressing during a loan spell at Craven Cottage back in the 2017/18 season.

Southampton, however, should look to keep Targett for the upcoming campaign; he looks perfect for the systems Ralph Hasenhuttl has been using at St. Mary's.

The former England U21 international is fantastic going forward, providing his Austrian boss with a great option when it comes to selecting someone for that left wing-back role.

Ryan Bertrand, of course, is likely to start the new season as Hasenhuttl's first choice in the position -- and probably rightly so.

The former Chelsea man is a very capable defender, as well as a full-back who can be dangerous when joining attacks.

But having had his injury problems in the campaign that has just concluded, Targett may very well be needed to provide both cover and competition. And turning 30 in August, it might not be long before the Saints need to start looking for a successor.

In Targett, they could have just the ideal man. With Yan Valery on the opposite side, Southampton would arguably be set for years.
