Tottenham Hotspur will take to the field for the second time in two days on Wednesday when they face West Ham United in the League Cup.
Both sides will meet at the London Stadium looking to book their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament, despite Spurs having played Manchester City in the Premier League on Monday.
Because of that fixture, Mauricio Pochettino will likely have to make a number of changes to his side to ensure they have the best possible chance of reaching the next round.
“It is so difficult, it is not easy. We are going to assess all the players and it is less than 48 hours to compete again, having had the circumstances of playing on a pitch that is so difficult to play in a tough and a very competitive game,” he said.
“We’ll see which players can repeat, some can be on the bench and some they need to rest. My feeling today is that it is going to be difficult to repeat some players, maybe [Eric] Dier who played 65 minutes, but I don’t believe too many players will be ready and fresh to play.”
With Pochettino naming Dier, barring any last-minute concerns, it would appear that the England international will be set to feature for Tottenham on Wednesday night.
The midfielder, who can also fill in at the back, could prove to be a crucial player to the side as they look to progress to the next round of the competition, having been knocked out of last year’s tournament by the Hammers.
Spurs could also look to use Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli from the start, as both only came on against Manchester City as second-half substitutes, meaning a move to start Dier would make sense as it would bring some balance to the team.
