Mauricio Pochettino has told his players that they need to “wake up” if they are to compete for the Premier League title this season, following their defeat to Watford on Sunday.
The Argentine was not happy with the way his side played at Vicarage Road and believed they had treated it as a ‘friendly’ in what he described as ‘painful’ viewing.
He told The Sun: “The reality is, if you want to be a contender today you should win – and win easy because everything was ready for us to win the game.
“It’s very painful. I was very disappointed and my message was you need to go there like a lion.”
He went on to state: “So painful. Often you play like this and win. It’s a very good wake-up call for everyone to say, ‘Come on, we need to compete’.
“We need to show we are contenders by winning. The only way to win is to give your best.”
Tottenham dominated the game against Watford, however, they found themselves on the wrong end of the result.
Spurs, who had to make changes at the back, with Michel Vorm coming in for an injured Hugo Lloris, failed to make the most of their chances and the Hornets took full advantage.
The home side have impressed with their early form, however, Pochettino would have felt his side would have had enough to win their match prior to kick-off.
Spurs will now go into the international break preparing for a home meeting with Liverpool, before meeting Inter Milan at the San Siro in the Champions League and the Argentine will be looking for a much better performance from his team.
