West Ham United boss David Moyes is expected to be extremely busy in the winter transfer market, with the former Manchester United boss keen to put his stamp on the squad having taken over from Slaven Bilic in November.
Hammers fans here in The Transfer Tavern are excited to see what Moyes does, with a number of comings and goings expected in the coming weeks. Our landlord caught up with fans around the jukebox to discuss potential targets, when reports emerged from Sky that revealed that the club had been offered the chance to sign Newcastle United defender, Chancel Mbemba. Manager Rafa Benitez is keen to move the former Anderlecht man on this month, after the £8 million signing failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at St James’ Park.
However Sky also suggest that Newcastle would not allow the defender to leave until a replacement is sourced, leaving Moyes in the lurch as to when and if any potential deal would go through. Moyes is also keen on Swansea defender Alfie Mawson, but the Swans are reluctant to sell the former Brentford and Barnsley man.
Landlord’s Verdict: Mbemba has struggled to adapt to the demands of English football since his arrival in 2015, and it looks likely the player will leave the north east this month. However at the age of 23, Mbemba is still young enough to fulfil the potential he showed in Belgium, and could prove an inspired signing should Moyes take a punt on the player.
However Mbemba would be a gamble given his failures at Newcastle, but his Premier League experience, the player could be worth the risk.
