Arsenal have joined AC Milan and Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser. Arsenal are keen to bolster their midfield in the upcoming January transfer window, due to the injuries suffered by Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby, which will keep them out for longer than Arsene Wenger expected.
The Gunners are already reportedly in talks with Real Madrid to sign Spanish midfielder Esteban Granero and they could it make it a double Spanish coup with the acquisition of Javi Garcia.
Garcia, a former Real Madrid midfielder himself, has been a mainstay in the Benfica team since his move to the Estadio Da Luz in 2009 for €7 million. The 24 year-old midfielder has become a key player in his 3 years in the Portuguese capital and Benfica will not give him up cheaply.
The Portuguese side have sold Angel Di Maria, Ramires, David Luiz and Fabio Coentrao in the last two years, but none of them went for below £18 million and it is unlikely that Javi Garcia will either.
Manchester United were rumoured to have been interested in Garcia for a while now, but it appears Arsenal are looking to steal a march on their rivals by making their move for the Spaniard.
