Like a pint from a fresh barrel there is nothing better than a transfer story with quotes. It is the holy grail in the world of the transfer rumour, something we can hold up and say ‘Look! This is based on something…”, and today I have one of those treats for you, so lets get stuck right into it. Highly sought after Ivorian forward Gervinho looks like he may be on the way out of French club Lille this Summer and there are a host of English teams ready to sign the pacey player should he decide to move on. The side are flying high on Ligue 1, in fact they are top of the pile but they are apparently ready to allow the player to leave this Summer for around £10million.
Gervinho began his career playing in his native country the Ivory Coast, before like many young African players he moved to Europe and played for Belgian side Beveren. Whilst playing there, the forward attracted the interests of Arsenal with some excellent performances and after a couple of years, he moved to French Ligue 1 side Le Mans. During his time there interest in the the player intensified with other French clubs such as Marseille, PSG and Monaco making their interest known, as well as these sides, Arsenal continued to be linked to the young African. The player described the possibility of playing for the Gunners as a ‘dream’, however nothing came to fruition and in July 2009 the striker moved to Lille costing £6.8million. His performances for Lille have been excellent and more clubs have began to show interest in the striker.
Gervinho can play on either wing, as well as up front, he is very quick and an excellent dribbler. He has proven himself on the international stage for his country as well as domestically in France and I believe that he is capable of being an effective player in the English league should he be given the necessary time to adapt to a quicker and more physical approach to football.
The clubs that are interested in signing the player include: long term admirers Arsenal, Newcastle United and current big spenders Liverpool. The player has generally been committed to whoever he has been contracted too, but he has recently been quoted in the media suggesting that his time at Lille may be coming to an end, he has said:
“I do not know what will happen at the end of the season, but it is normal that I want to improve and grow as a player….But now my goal is to fight for Lille to help us qualify for next season’s Champions League.”
There is the suggestion in these comments that the player may be looking for a new challenge whilst remaining committed to his current club for the rest of this season. It is quite understandable that at 23 years old the quick forward would want to test his skills at a higher level. He has been an excellent servant to Lille and if he can help them to the Ligue 1 title this season it will be a great achievement for him to leave on.
As for the prospective clubs, Arsenal would definitely be the most attractive to the player. He has spoken before of his liking for Arsene Wenger’s team, and how much he would like to play for them. I suppose it is unclear whether he would be good enough to challenge for titles at the top end of the English game, so potentially a move to Newcastle or Liverpool might be better suited, but I believe it would be hard for the player to resist the pull of the Emirates should he leave France this Summer. If anything else, Gervinho would be a great addition to the Premiership Best Hair 11….
