Having missed out on Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder, Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Bayern Munich ace Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The German play-maker was central to his country’s performances during last summer’s World Cup, not least their 4-1 demolition of England. If United fans could choose one area to strengthen in their team, it would surely be in central midfield; Chelsea have Frank Lampard and Michael Essien, Arsenal have Cesc Fabregas, Liverpool have Stephen Gerrard and United have Michael Carrick.
So, it looked as though the unsettled Schweinsteiger would be the perfect addition to Ferguson’s ranks, and could provide a legitimate replacement for Paul Scholes. Yet, unfortunately for United, Real Madrid appear to have muscled in once again, and it is now believed that the Bayern midfielder will opt to join up with Jose Mourinho instead.
Schweinsteiger would, of course, be following two of his compatriots to the Bernabeu, Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira, themselves World Cup heroes for Germany in South Africa. Bayern currently value their man at £30m and will demand a high price of Madrid, but when have price or the simple fact that their squad will struggle to accommodate yet another star ever been an issue to los Bandidos?
This will certainly come as a blow to United, who cannot realistically hope to out-bid Madrid, and it looks as though Feguson’s search for the missing piece to his midfield will continue.
So, if not Schweinsteiger, then who?
