Meet The €30M Sensation Carlo Wanted All Along – Before He Had Torres Forced Upon Him

Back in January, when Fernando Torres was still on the physios table at Liverpool, Chelsea were looking for a striker.  Rumour has it they made a move for Bayern Munich goal machine Mario Gomez only to be rebuffed, well according to our friends at tuttomercatoweb they might be about to renew that interest.

The Italian sports website even go as far to claim that to secure the player they will allow one of Didier Drogba or nomadic Nicolas Anelka go in the other direction.

Gomez has been a prolific goalscorer in the Bundesliga ever since he emerged and made his debut at Stuttgart in 2003.  He won the Bundesliga with his first club in the 06-07 campaign, and he had a scoring record of 63 goals in 121 league games for the club.  He eventually moved to Bayern Munich where he has again become a league champion and so far his scoring exploits have continued, netting 29 times in 55 appearances.

He has been pretty impressive at international level as well, scoring on 15 occasions for his country.  Gomez is powerful, strong in the air and has a good finish, he is a good all round striker.

Rumours have circulated for a while however about the German moving on and looking for a new challenge next season, and this is probably down to the fact that Champions League football is far from a certainty for the club next season.  They currently lie 3rd and would therefore have to endure the qualifying round, but Hannover 96 in 4th are only one point behind them.  If Bayern don’t manage a top 3 finish this season, leaving them out of the Champions League, there could be a few big names on the way out of the Allianz Arena, and Mario Gomez could be at the front of that queue.

Gomez would be an ideal player for Chelsea I think, and I am not sure that he would have any problems adapting to the Premier League.  Tuttomercatoweb reckon that either Didier Drogba or Anelka would go in the other direction, and I don’t see either of them as a particularly huge loss at this point.

Granted Fernando Torres currently looks like a con artist who has somehow got himself into the Chelsea side, but I am sure he will come good in the future.  Both Anelka and Drogba are the wrong side of 30, and Gomez is just 25 making him a much more attractive prospect.  With Daniel Sturridge possibly returning this Summer, both of Chelsea’s aging strikers are starting to appear surplus to requirements.

All this is without the mooted suggestion that the Stamford Bridge side will also sign Belgian Romelu Lukaku, a strike force of Torres, Lukaku, Gomez and Sturridge?  Now that does have a fresh look about it!
