Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in recent times such has been their side’s impressive start to the new season, which sees them third in the Premier League table and already through to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men may well have struggled at Wembley in the early phase of the campaign, losing to Chelsea before drawing with Burnley and Swansea City, but they have since banished any concerns about a hoodoo with huge victories over Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in European competition, as well as a 4-1 success over Liverpool last month. And they headed into the current international break with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at the national stadium, with Son Heung-min’s second half strike enough to move Spurs level on points with Manchester United in the Premier League table.
Thus, there has been a buzz among our resident Tottenham fans this week, yet the smile may well be wiped off their faces if a recent report from Don Balon is anything to go by, as they outline that Barcelona forward Lionel Mess wants Spurs’ Dele Alli to join him at the Nou Camp.
21-year-old Alli made the move to North London back in 2015 from Milton Keynes Dons but was immediately loaned back to the League One outfit, helping them win promotion to the Championship after their second place finish in the third tier.
However, the England international returned to Spurs that summer and has since gone from strength to strength with 39 goals and 25 assists in 109 matches for Pochettino’s team, and with seven goals in just 13 games this time round, he’s clearly not letting up.
And it’s form which has clearly caught the eye of Barca’s Messi, as reports suggest that the Argentina international wants Alli at the Nou Camp in a bid to bolster their midfield ranks for the coming years.
And with Real Madrid also thought to want the 21-year-old, Spurs could find themselves in a huge battle in the coming transfer windows to keep their English sensation.
Landlord’s verdict: Dele Alli’s meteoric rise from relative unknown in League One to one of the Premier League’s most prized assets has been watched by many across the globe, not least some of the European football’s heavyweights.
Champions League winners Real Madrid have reportedly been holding an interest in the 21-year-old for a while now, yet it appears that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi wants him to move to the Nou Camp.
With Andres Iniesta 33 years of age and the likes of Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, and Paulinho all approaching 30, the Argentina international clearly feels that fresh blood is needed in the midfield ranks, and at the tender age of 21, Alli could be the man.
It will take a substantial sum of money to lure him away from Tottenham, but one senses that Spurs need to start winning trophies on both a domestic and European scale to retain their star players, of which Alli is certainly one.
