Today however those hopes have been dashed, Arsenal and Liverpool were amongst those thought to be leading the chase for the defender, but it appears that he has said ‘non’ to such a suggestion, and both clubs are having to say ‘Au Revoir’ to their hopes of signing the athletic defender….I crack myself up sometimes.
Mexes spent his early life playing for Auxerre, he plied his trade there for 5 years before he upped sticks, dumped the stripy t-shirts and beret and swapped it all for a life in Italy where he played for Roma. He has excelled in the Italian capital and turned himself into one of the most highly regarded players in Europe. His contract however expires this Summer and there has been a breakdown in negotiations over a new deal.
It appears today however that the player has reignited hopes that an agreement could be reached, he told canal+:
“I want to remain in the Serie A for as long as I can…I have settled in well in Italy….I now know the league quite well and do not want to move away.”.
Whether this paves the way for a new contract with Roma, or whether it simply means that the much mooted move to AC Milan or Napoli is still on, either way it is bad news for the English clubs chasing the French international.
He would have been a perfect fit for Arsenal, French speaking, dominant in the air, strong, organised, he is everything that Arsene Wenger needs in a defender currently. Failing to land Mexes could lead the Gunners to stepping up their pursuit of Bolton and England defender Gary Cahill. This to be fair isn’t something that I believe is overly bad news, because I firmly believe that Cahill is a quality Premier League defender.
Liverpool will probably be less irked by this development, quite simply because they are in less need of a central defender. The 29 year old is a quality centreback and he would have been a fine asset to any of the English clubs that he was linked with, but wherever he signs a contract now it seems highly unlikely that it will be outside of Serie A.
