Tottenham supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this weekend after seeing their side lose 2-0 to rivals Arsenal in the North London derby on Saturday, in turn suffering a third Premier League defeat of the campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Gunners off the back of successive victories over Real Madrid and Crystal Palace, but produced a limp display against Arsene Wenger’s side at the Emirates Stadium. First half goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez secured a deserved and ultimately comfortable 2-0 victory for Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, a result which moves the Gunners to within a point of their North London rivals in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many despondent and deflated Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent days, although many are already turning their attentions to Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, where Pochettino’s side will seek the victory that could clinch top spot in Group H.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Tottenham fans to discuss in the Tavern, not least reports linking Sheffield United starlet David Brooks with a move to Wembley.
The 20-year-old has been making huge strides at the Championship club little over 12 months on from his senior debut, with his one goal and two assists in 15 league appearances helping Chris Wilder’s men to second place in the second tier table.
And following a fine performance for Wales last week against Panana, the midfielder appears to be attracting interest from those in the top tier, notably Pochettino’s Spurs and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
But Brooks must seek a move to Tottenham over Liverpool should both firm up their interest, as the chance to play, learn, and develop under Pochettino could be exactly what he needs to fulfil his undoubted potential.
Ultimately, when one takes a look at the current Spurs team, it is full of young players who have been given an opportunity by Pochettino, and have since gone on to shine.
The likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, and more recently Harry Winks were little known to many outside of the Tottenham bubble before making their first team bows, and they now make up what many see as one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League – they may also play a big part in the next few years on the international stage for England as well.
And very little of this would have been made possible without Pochettino’s influence and guidance, and ultimately his decision to give them a platform from which to perform.
And that must be of interest to Sheffield United’s Brooks were he to consider making a move in the coming years.
Yes, both Spurs and Liverpool have quality players throughout their respective squads and first team football is certainly not a given, but Pochettino will give young players that chance to shine in the senior side, whether it’s in the Premier League, European competition, or the domestic cup competitions.
One only has to see what the Argentine has done with the likes of Alli, Dier, Kane, and Winks to know that Tottenham is a hugely desirable destination for young players now, and as such Brooks should opt for Spurs over Liverpool in the coming transfer windows.
