Tottenham supporters have been significantly more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side get back to winning ways with victories over Stoke City and Brighton in the Premier League, both of which have propelled them back into the division’s top four.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men won just one of their preceding six league matches prior to the visit of Mark Hughes’ Stoke on Saturday, but produced a performance close to their best to sweep aside the Potters 5-1 at Wembley. And the North London outfit backed that up with a 2-0 success over Chris Hughton’s Brighton on Wednesday night, with goals from Serge Aurier and Son Heung-min securing a comfortable win for the hosts, who in turn moved above Liverpool into fourth place in the Premier League following the Reds’ draw with West Brom.
Consequently, there have been many happier Spurs supporters in the Tavern in recent times, who are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which outlines that a deal to bring Everton’s Ross Barkley to the club in January is very much on following intriguing comments from Toffees chief Sam Allardyce.
The 23-year-old midfielder sees his current contract at Goodison Park expire in the summer and as of yet no extension has been agreed, leaving his future very uncertain heading into the January window.
The England international almost joined Premier League champions Chelsea during the summer only for a move to break down at the last minute, yet they and Spurs reportedly retain their interest heading into the New Year.
And recent comments from Everton boss Allardyce suggest that a deal could very well take place, saying: ‘If someone comes in during January and says ‘Here you go’ and the club say, ‘Look, if he’s not going to sign for us, this has to be the case’ then I accept that.’
And this recent admission is sure to intrigue our resident Spurs supporters, with many feeling that Barkley could bolster their ranks and add depth to their squad going into the second half of the season.
Landlord’s verdict: Ross Barkley’s Everton future has been subject of speculation for a while now, what with the midfielder having not signed a new deal to remain at Goodison Park beyond the summer.
And after a failed move to Chelsea during the summer, that speculation has only intensified heading into the January window, while Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham are also thought to retain an interest.
As such, the North London outfit are likely to be intrigued by Sam Allardyce’s recent admission on the matter, suggesting that a deal could well take place in January if the Everton board feel it’s in the best interest of the club.
Thus, a deal could very well be on for Spurs to lure Barkley to Wembley, but what does seem particularly clear is that his future lies away from Merseyside.
