So far, this summer has been one of anguish for the Toon faithful.

Mike Ashley hasn't backed Rafa Benitez in the transfer market so far, and with the window fast approaching, if Newcastle don't get any signings in quick, they could well be stuck in a fight for relegation.

To make matters worse Rafa Benitez is refusing to sign a new deal until Ashley commits some funds to the club's transfer plans. Benitez is desperate to strengthen his squad and apparently has identified Croatian international, Milan Badelj according to the Mirror.

The Breakdown

Badelj is currently out of contract following four years with Serie A club side, Fiorentina - something which might tempt Mike Ashley.

In midfield, Newcastle have lost Jack Colback and Mikel Merino and as of yet have only brought in Ki Sung-yeung in midfield.

A defensive midfielder, Badelj was part of the Croatian side that managed to reach the Wolrd Cup Final. The experienced midfielder is a smart player and is more than capable of coming in and doing a job for Benitez in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has been an important side for Fiorentina over the last few seasons and could a shrewd piece of business.

Mike Ashley has informed Benitez that the club will need to sell before it can bring anyone in and the fact that Badelj is a free agent could well attract Mike Ashley to his signature.

Newcastle have only made three signings this summer, they need to make Badelj their fourth.
