Newcastle United are thought to have attracted a number of potential buyers recently as Mike Ashley looks to sell the club.
The current Magpies owner is thought to have been keen to offload the St James’ Park outfit for a while now and it is no secret fans have wanted him to leave the club for a long time.
At times, it looks as though there is a strong possibility that the club could be sold, however, things then seem to take a turn in a different direction – and that is what appears to have happened again.
An American group of businessmen are thought to have been the latest group interested in a possible takeover, however, Chris Waugh of the Newcastle Chronicle has detailed some potentially devastating news for fans.
Writing in his Q&A column, he revealed that he had been told that Ashley expects to remain at the club for the “medium term”, although admitted that things could change over the course of six-to-12 months.
“Senior sources at St James’ Park insist Newcastle are planning for Ashley to remain owner for the “medium term”, despite the club still officially remaining for sale,” he wrote.
Newcastle fans will have been disappointed with the news that Ashley still believes he will be at the club for what could be considered a long time.
Although a possible takeover would always take some time to happen, it does not appear that the current owner is in a position to actually sell up just yet, which could be bad news for the Toon Army.
With the club sitting in a precarious position at the bottom of the Premier League, he will need to give Rafa Benitez financial backing to keep the club in the division if things do not improve quickly, however, if he is continuing his quest to sell, then it is unlikely he will allow the Spaniard to spend big in January.
