The relationship at Newcastle United between Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley appears to be a fragile one at best.
Benitez’s current deal expires at the end of the current campaign and despite there having been talks about a new contract, nothing has yet been finalised leaving concern at St. James’ Park.
Ashley is understood to have felt underappreciated by the Spaniard with the current financial situation as the boss frequently complains about the situation, however, it is believed the owner wants him to remain at the helm.
Benitez is set to hold talks with Lee Charnley in the coming days to discuss a possible agreement in whereby everybody is happy.
Ashley is right to try and keep Benitez at Newcastle beyond the end of the current season, however, it could be a tall order for him to accomplish.
The owner will need to prove to the manager that he is willing to back him in the transfer market, something he would have witnessed when he watched his first live game in 18 months against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
He may only have one chance to prove that he will back him, with the January transfer window approaching, however, if he does not, then Benitez could be saying goodbye to the St. James’ Park faithful in the summer.
