It’s fair to say that the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are ecstatic with this season. With a top four finish all but secured and a Champions League final on the horizon, Jurgen Klopp’s side have gained the tag of one of Europe’s most exciting sides.
The likes of Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have been unstoppable at times this season with the Reds the second highest scorers in the Premier League with 80 goals from 36 games. Despite only losing four league games all season the Anfield side still find themselves 22 points off of champions Manchester City, so what does Klopp need to do to turn Liverpool into serious title contenders?
The source of their attacking nature and high press has led to them squeezing teams into their own half and forcing them into mistakes, as well as being dangerous on the counter-attack. However, their problems seem to be defensively, although the signing of Virgil van Dijk has added some solidarity but it is yet to push them towards the title.
Although they sit third in the league Liverpool have drawn a total of 12 games this season, since the turn of the year the Champions League has taken priority for Jurgen Klopp and their league form has taken a hit as a result of that. Squad rotation against the likes of Everton and Stoke prior to a European game has resulted in bore draws in games you would expect The Reds to pick up maximum points in.
The lack of squad depth has been a problem for Liverpool, with Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke struggling to live up to the high levels set by the deadly front three previously mentioned. Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno have looked shaky at the back when bought in perhaps due to lack of game time.
With Loris Karius only recently establishing himself as Number One it has been a season of indifference at Anfield and Klopp will need to add more quality and squad depth to his side if he is hoping to challenge on multiple fronts this time next season.
Since the departure of Pepe Reina, Liverpool have struggled to have a stand out performer in between the sticks with Simon Mignolet and Karius both coming under criticism in the past few seasons for their mistakes that has led to goals for the opposition.
Despite a current resurgence from the 24-year-old that has seen him establish himself as the number one over former Sunderland stopper Mignolet, some fans and pundits alike don’t seem too confident in his abilities. Reports have recently linked the Reds with Stoke stopper Jack Butland who has shone in what has been an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Potters.
Should Klopp secure the signing of Butland and keep Karius to progress it will give him two solid options to battle it out for the goalkeeping shirt. It may well signal the end of Mignolet’s time on Anfield but could be what’s needed to push Liverpool towards the title next year.
Liverpool fans what do you think is needed to push for the title?
