With Paul Scholes looking ever more likely to retire at the end of the season, Sir Alex Ferguson has targeted Tottenham ace, Luka Modric as his replacement.
The Manchester United boss is known to be a huge admirer of the 25 year-old midfielder and is set to make a bid of around £35 million to acquire his services this summer.
The Croatian play-maker has been in superb form this season after playing a pivotal role in Tottenham’s run to the quarter finals of the Champions League. Gareth Bale may have stolen all the headlines this season at Spurs, particularly in the Champions League but it is the Croatian who has impressed Ferguson the most.
Gareth Bale may have picked up the Players’ Player of the Year accolade but when asked who he would have chosen Ferguson replied: “Luka Modric.”
This outspoken admiration for the midfielder has led to much speculation over Modric’s future with his most likely destination being Old Trafford. Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes is still yet to sign a new contract with the club, prompting Chief Executive David Gill to confirm that the club would not be surprised if he was to join Gary Neville into retirement this summer.
Luka Modric would therefore be a fantastic long term replacement for the midfielder who would fit in well at the Old Trafford set up. It is unlikely however; that Harry Redknapp would be willing to part ways with one of his most prized possessions meaning United would have to pay big money to bring him to Old Trafford.
Harry Redknapp would not be happy with Daniel Levy and the Tottenham board if they were to sell their top players this summer as he aims to fight for a Champions League spot next season after just missing out this campaign. The close relationship between Redknapp and Fergie may play a part in the transfer with reports suggesting that Dimitar Berbatov may move back the other way.
The former Tottenham striker has been in prolific form this season and is set to be top goal scorer in the Premier League. The Bulgarian has fallen out of favour in recent times, particularly in the big games with Ferguson opting for the Rooney and Hernandez partnership up front. A cash plus Berbatov deal may therefore be on the cards this summer.
Such a deal would be very complex and would take a lot of negotiating between the two clubs. If Luka Modric really aspires to play at the highest level and win trophies then he would be a fool to turn down such a move to the Theatre of Dreams.
