After a promising start to the summer, not much has happened at Southampton in recent weeks regarding transfers.

Centre-forward is the area of the squad supporters would have been desperate to see strengthened and, while there is still time for that to happen, it is surprising that Southampton did not address that department as soon as the transfer window opened.

As well as up front, Southampton could also look to bring in a defender ahead of today's five o'clock deadline.

The Breakdown

According to Football Insider, the Saints are planning a raid on Valencia for right-back Martin Montoya with the 27-year-old also said to be attracting interest from Brighton.

Montoya, who is valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, came through the youth ranks at Barcelona but was understandably forced to play second fiddle to Dani Alves once being promoted to the senior squad.

Montoya has since had unsuccessful loan spells at Inter Milan and Real Betis before playing a more prominent role at Valencia during their last two La Liga campaigns.

Valencia, though, are now said to be open to offers for Montoya and the Spaniard could be a clever bit of business done by Southampton if they can get a deal over the line.

Like most modern full-backs, Montoya is capable of getting forward and providing his side with an option out wide, although his decision making once getting into the final third is not always the best

Nevertheless, Montoya is still a very capable defender who would provide good competition for Southampton's current first-choice right-back Cedric Soares.
