More bad news for Conte: Chelsea suffer frustrating blow ahead of Roma encounter

It’s been a tough few weeks for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, and it got worse over the weekend…

Another loss came on Saturday at the hands of lowly Crystal Palace, who themselves had had a hard time until they faced the champions. As is often the case, Chelsea’s opponents got a second wind against the Blues, and when the final whistle blew, the Chelsea fans in the pub were left feeling disappointed once again, particularly after losing to Man City a couple of weeks ago. The loss leaves Chelsea’s title challenge in tatters at present, and whilst it’s early enough to turn things around, the prospect of retaining the Premier League is looking an unlikely one.

The result wasn’t the only negative on the day, though, with Victor Moses also suffering an injury. With Chelsea short on depth, an injury in any sense of the word is a blow, but particularly for Moses, given how good he has been since Antonio Conte came in.

Now, though, things have gotten even worse for Chelsea, with the true extent of that blow coming to light. Indeed, according to the Telegraph, Moses could be out for as long as a month – after initial tests confirmed a significant hamstring injury.

This is a massive blow for Chelsea, as they are set to embark on a vital few weeks. After successive Premier League defeats, they desperately need to get back to winning ways domestically, whilst a few more wins in Europe could all but confirm their place in the Champions League last 16.

Chelsea do have options at the back, notably Davide Zappacosta, but given his lack of Premier League experience, that’s a situation that is far from ideal.

Conte is certainly going to have to earn his salary as he looks to manoeuvre through these choppy seas.

Landlord’s Verdict

Davide Zappacosta was decent against Crystal Palace, and Antonio Conte will be hoping that he can make the step up.

With so many fixtures coming up, though, Conte may not be able to rely solely on the Italian, with the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger also within a chance of being called up.

Either way, this is a big blow for Chelsea.
