Mourinho actively involved in push for Man Utd to agree terms with one of Europe’s best – report

There is an expectation amongst the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern that David De Gea will sign a new deal at the club soon. The Spaniard has been in sensational form this season, and since the arrival of Jose Mourinho in particular, he has turned into arguably their most important player.

It would seem natural, then, that the Red Devils would look to reward him with a new contract as a result – but according to Duncan Castles, that still isn’t the case.

Duncan Castles, who has been reporting for Yahoo Sport, has revealed that David De Gea is still waiting for an offer of a new deal, with the Red Devils apparently typically keen to wait until a contract begins to wind down before offering fresh terms.

Nonetheless, Jose Mourinho is said to be actively involved in the push to agree terms – with the Portuguese clearly keen for his club to break against tradition and tie down the future of a player that has turned into one of Europe’s best players over the last few years.

David De Gea has been an everpresent in the Man Utd team this season, and with good reason. He has continually delivered fantastic performances between the sticks, and it has become a near-weekly occurrence for him to keep Man Utd above water in crunch fixtures.

Mourinho, then, will likely be furious that a deal has yet to be agreed – and he will have to move quickly to ensure that the Spaniard stays out of the clutches of Real Madrid.

Landlord’s Verdict

This decision is truly baffling if it’s true.

If there’s any player worth breaking tradition for it is David De Gea. Without him, there is no telling where Man Utd would be this season.

He’s the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, and he’s arguably the best in Europe – and so Man Utd, simply put, can’t afford to lose him.

Mourinho clearly wants to keep him, and he must do all he can to make sure that happens.
