Mourinho could look to £31.5m-rated defender in an effort to solve Man Utd problem – report

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned at the state of their side’s defence. Despite Jose Mourinho being renowned as a master defensive technician, he has been unable to turn his back-line into one that is worthy of competing at the top of the Premier League table.

The Man Utd defence, as a collective, looked poor against Newcastle over the weekend, and it’s become pretty clear that the backline is becoming a pretty major problem for Jose Mourinho.

It will come as no surprise, then, to learn that the Portuguese is considering ways that he can improve his fortunes.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Man Utd are monitoring the situation surrounding Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, with the Belgian yet to sign an extension to his contract at Spurs.

Though not expected to make an imminent move away, the continued uncertainty surrounding his long-term future is certainly intriguing, and a move away from the club is certainly not outside the realms of possibility.

Despite not playing much this season, owing to a long-term injury blow, Alderweireld would certainly bring a lot to the fold at Old Trafford. One of Europe’s most consistent defenders, the Belgian has formed a deadly partnership with Jan Vertonghen at the back – emerging as one of the best signings in recent memory at Spurs.

Indeed, given Man Utd’s defensive struggles, a move for the Belgian would make a lot of sense – and it’s a deal that our resident Red Devils would love to see. That said, given that he’s rated at £31.5 million by Transfer Markt, it wouldn’t be cheap.

Landlord’s Verdict

Alderweireld is, undoubtedly, one of Europe’s best. The 28-year-old brings so much stability and quality to the defence, and that’s what Man Utd are dearly lacking right now.

However, Daniel Levy won’t want to let him leave, particularly to Man Utd, and they’ll likely move to tie down his long-term future as soon as possible.

There is certainly an opening for Man Utd, but at the moment, it’s a very small one.
