Mourinho: I would be ‘more than happy’ for striker to be at Man Utd next season

Wayne Rooney is a divisive figure amongst the Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern…

Earlier in his career, he was heralded as a hero. One of England’s finest ever players, he was lethal for both club and country. However, in recent years, he has begun to struggle. Lacking his characteristically lethal poaching ability in front of goal, the Englishman slowly drifted out of favour at Old Trafford – a situation that has only worsened since the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

Though he attempted to use him early doors, Jose Mourinho has rarely decided to opt for Rooney within his starting team as of late, but despite that, the Portuguese doesn’t want him to leave.

Speaking after Man Utd’s historic Europa League final win, via Goal, Mourinho said: “He can perfectly be here next season because he is always a very important player for us. If he stays with us next season, I’m more than happy with that”.

Whilst Mourinho isn’t regularly utilising Rooney, he appears more than happy for him to remain within the Man Utd squad. As our landlord has so often said, leadership is key in the dressing room, and Rooney delivers that in droves. What’s more, with Man Utd likely to fight on multiple fronts next season, Mourinho will need as much depth as possible.

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern wouldn’t mind Rooney staying, but they definitely don’t want him to start regularly…
