Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing with the club’s early business in the transfer window as they look to catch Manchester City in the Premier League next season.
The Red Devils ended the season in second, 19 points adrift of their rivals in the race for the title. Jose Mourinho was trophyless for the first time as United manager after losing to former club Chelsea in the FA Cup final. United have responded with some early moves in the transfer window.
Mourinho is expected to complete a £52m deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred while promising youngster Diogo Dalot sealed his move from Porto for £19m. With Luke Shaw surely likely to leave and Daley Blind out-of-favour, a left-back is also a priority for the Portuguese. Juventus’ Alex Sandro has been targeted but will be difficult to lure from Turin.
Instead, they should launch an ambitious bid to tempt Marcos Alonso from Chelsea. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard has been one of the best players during Antonio Conte’s reign at the Blues following a £20m move from Fiorentina. He netted seven goals and registered two assists in the Premier League last season and was named in the PFA Team of the Year.
With Chelsea missing out on Champions League football and the club in turmoil, United could look to take advantage by poaching Alonso. The 27-year-old would be a long-term replacement for Ashley Young and would significantly weaken a Premier League rival. It will be an extremely difficult deal to pull off but could prove to be an astute piece of business.
