The Manchester United fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern seem to have a new top name to get excited about every day at the moment as manager Jose Mourinho looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title in the new season.
One name the punters here in the bar are very keen to see in a United shirt come the first game is Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier.
However, according to reports from The Telegraph, last season’s runners-up are driving a hard bargain and won’t be letting the England international go anywhere for less than £50m.
If that weren’t the only problem for the negotiators at Old Trafford, Mourinho has added pressure by telling officials that he wants the 23-year-old signed before a ball is kicked in the Premier League.
Dier lost his solid first team spot in centre midfield last season thanks to the form of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama, and was often used in his less-preferred role of centre-back.
Mourinho, however, is looking for Dier to come in as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, who signed a one-year extension on his current deal earlier this year.
United fans, we want to hear from you! Is Dier worth £50m? Would he be a capable replacement for Carrick? Let us know in the comments…
