The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting their side’s spending to continue over the next few months. The Red Devils have spent freely since Jose Mourinho came to Old Trafford, with big names like Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba coming in. These players have moved to the club and made an immediate impact, and they’re now helping Mourinho produce a charge on the Premier League title this season.
Given the success of Mourinho’s recent dealings, then, there is a palpable sense of excitement amongst supporters in light of the news that he could be looking to bring in another player. According to the Daily Star, Mourinho is keen to take advantage of David Luiz’s situation at Chelsea and bring the Brazilian to Old Trafford – with Chelsea said to rate the defender at around £34 million.
Luiz, of course, missed out on Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Man Utd after being dropped by Antonio Conte, and his future now looks uncertain as a result.
For Mourinho, a move would certainly be an odd one, but it makes sense to a point. He’s experienced in the Premier League, and he’s proven at the highest level. It would certainly still be a shock to the fans in the Transfer Tavern if it were to happen, though.
A move for a 30-year-old David Luiz, particularly at over £30 million, might not make much financial sense, but he’d bring a lot to the fold at Old Trafford.
Able to play in both midfield and defence, he is versatile, and he has proven that he is also consistent over the last year. It might be a decent move, for the right price. It remains to be seen if Chelsea will sell, though.
