Mourinho should emulate Guardiola with sensational deal for £45m-rated right-back this summer

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited to see how Mourinho will approach the upcoming transfer market as recent reports suggest he will focus on strengthening his options at full-back.

If there’s one thing that Manchester United need to take from their season so far it’s the realisation that they need to significantly strengthen their squad this summer in order to prevent their local-rivals from dominating the Premier League once again next season. There’s no doubt that Mourinho is fully aware of the task that lies before him, but whether he will be able to execute his plan to bridge the gulf in class between Manchester’s giants remains to be seen.

United will need to strengthen various aspects of their squad, but a recent report from The Guardian claims that Mourinho will focus on improving his options at full-back this summer. The report states that United are in the market for both a right-back and a left-back this summer, with Tottenham’s Danny Rose topping the shortlist of left-back candidates.

However, there’s little indication as to who Mourinho is interested in signing at right-back just yet. Antonio Valencia has performed an admirable role at right-back for United over the years, but at 32-years-of-age it’s clear that the Ecuadorian international will need replacing in the near future.

United will need to land a right-back who possesses both genuine quality and the potential to cement his name on the team-sheet for years to come, and one player who fits the bill is Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt). The German international has been consistently brilliant at right-back for the Bundesliga champions so far this season both defensively and offensively.

Kimmich has managed to lay on 17 assists in all-competitions this season despite playing at full-back for the entirety of the season, so there’s no doubt that the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba would benefit from his exceptional end-product in the final-third.

At just 23-years-of-age Kimmich still has improving to do, so Bayern will undoubtedly demand an extortionate fee for his services, but considering the success Man City have enjoyed after spending huge sums of money on their full-backs, it’s a bullet United will have to reluctantly bite if they wish to challenge their local-rivals for the title next season.
