Mourinho should try and make sure that £300,000-per-week striker is at Man Utd next season – here’s why

The general thought in the Transfer Tavern is that Wayne Rooney will leave the club this summer, with the Englishman struggling to become a regular in the Man Utd first team this season…

However, whilst a move away might make sense – given his sizeable £300,000-per-week wages and lack of game time – this is something that Jose Mourinho should try and avoid this summer.

Now, of course, Rooney has struggled for form this season, but that doesn’t mean that he’s lost it. Rather, the Englishman is going through a rough patch, and his poor form certainly hasn’t been helped by the constant shifting in position that he has suffered for much of the campaign. Playing in midfield and as a centre-forward, it is always going to be difficult to really adjust, and if Rooney were able to settle in one position, he likely would be able to impress a bit more. What’s more, he hasn’t played regularly for a while now, and its very hard to make an impact – particularly at his age – when you’re only given 20 minutes here and there.

Regardless of how you look at it, though, it is going to be tough for Rooney, on current form, to be a regular starter. But his role within the squad is still huge regardless of that. Not many sides in Europe would be able to call on a player of Rooney’s quality from the bench or in a cup game, and that could be vital. What’s more, his influence off the field cannot be understated. He is the leader within the Man Utd dressing room, and his departure could spell disaster. Man Utd’s current playing squad isn’t very experienced, and his knowledge could be key.

Mourinho recently came out and said that he wants to keep the striker, and this summer – he should definitely heed his own advice and make it happen.
