Jamaal Lascelles has reportedly fallen out with both Rafael Benitez and Matt Ritchie over the last week, and whilst both situations have been resolved, this does offer cause for concern for Newcastle. The Magpies are struggling so far this season, and the last thing that they need is a player causing trouble.
That said, Lascelles is so important to their cause, and as the leader of the team, you would expect him to take ownership of the squad somewhat. However, perhaps falling out with the manager could be the final straw, and given Newcastle’s tendency to avoid spending where possible, Mike Ashley is unlikely to refuse a big money offer for a player like Lascelles.
This is where Man Utd should come in. Bringing him to the club wouldn’t be easy, but the problems would surely make that task easier, and the job that he could do at Old Trafford would be significant.
Of course, Man Utd have their own problems at present, and none are greater than those in defence. Jose Mourinho has so many options going forward, like Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard, but in defence, there are more than a few problems. Luke Shaw has impressed, whilst Antonio Valencia has been as solid as usual – but between the pair, problems have arisen. The likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones have all looked poor, and that’s been an issue for Man Utd.
You can’t win games without defensive quality, and at present, Man Utd do not have enough of that. Lascelles, then, ignoring all of the current issues he has at his club, would naturally be a fantastic option. He’s been the glue at the back for Newcastle, leading the team with quality whenever he is on the field.
In comparison to Eric Bailly last season, the Englishman shone. Granted, Bailly played less, but on a game-by-game basis, Lascelles was far superior – coming through with more aerial wins and more clearances per game.
Crucially, consistency is the main aspect of his game that would suit Old Trafford. Anyone can be good for a game or two, and Victor Lindelof has proved that, but the real task is keeping that up. Fortunately, Lascelles has rarely had a bad moment in a black and white shirt, and his reputation has increased accordingly. Mistakes and errors rarely crop up, and that’s so important for a defender. Significantly, it’s not going to get tougher than it is at Newcastle right now. They’re struggling, and they are often constantly under pressure – meaning that he can’t have a break for even a moment. It’s rare that Man Utd aren’t able to dominate games, and so the lack of constant running towards him would make life easier.
With every passing year he is improving, and so over the coming months and years, especially under a manager as efficient as Jose Mourinho, he could reach new heights. He wouldn’t be cheap, but for Man Utd, a move for Lascelles could finally solve a problem that has been haunting Jose Mourinho since he moved to Old Trafford.
