Move for £35.1m-rated classy Italian would be Liverpool’s best signing for years

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to get a little nervous following three games without a win in the Premier League and a Champions League final on the horizon.

The Reds failed to beat West Brom and Stoke before an Olivier Giroud header secured a 1-0 win for Chelsea at the weekend. The result is not great for Jurgen Klopp, but fate is in their hands with Champions League football guaranteed if they defeat Brighton on the final day of the season. The Reds also have a Champions League final against Real Madrid to look forward to.

With two crucial fixtures just around the corner, Klopp’s transfer plans cannot get underway just yet despite reports in France claiming the Reds are nearing a deal for Lyon’s Nabil Fekir. The German will add Naby Keita to his squad in the summer. However, even more squad depth is needed if Liverpool are to be competitive on all fronts next campaign.

Klopp seriously lacks depth at the back with only four recognised centre-backs currently on the book. Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have struggled with injuries throughout their time at the club, and a new centre-back should be on the shortlist.

The perfect man for the job could be AC Milan stopper – Alessio Romagnoli. Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old has blossomed into one of the finest defenders in the Serie A after breaking into the Milan first team. He is not the finished article, but under Klopp, he could develop into a world-class defender.

Alongside Virgil Van Dijk, the Italian could be perfect. A left-footed defender would allow the Dutchman to move to the right side of defender where he is much more comfortable. The Italian club are unlikely to allow their prized asset to leave but if Gianluigi Donnarumma departs the club, Romagnoli could be next.

Liverpool fans, could Klopp persuade Alessio Romagnoli to join Liverpool? Let us know!
