Having brought in a host of quality signings this summer, Everton’s squad is starting to look like a really competitive one.
And one duel that Everton supporters can expect to see this season is between Leighton Baines and Lucas Digne.
£16.2m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Digne arrived from Barcelona in August as the long-term successor to Baines in the left-back position, and has already made an impression in the few games he has played in.
Baines, however, is unlikely to roll over so easily and looks ready for a fight having made appearances in all four of Everton’s Premier League fixtures so far.
Down the years, Baines has been brilliant for the club and was one of the best left-backs in the division.
The Everton faithful, though, may feel it is time for the 33-year-old to take a step back now that Digne is at Goodison Park.
At Transfer Tavern, a case was made for both Baines and Digne in regards to who should be Marco Silva’s first-choice left-back, and Everton supporters have since made it clear who they feel should get the nod.
Out of the fans polled, a massive 78% voted for Digne to start at left-back with just 22% of voters keen for Baines to retain his status at the club as No.1 in the position.
Even though he is now 33 and cannot dominate the left flank like how he did in his prime, Baines still has a lot to offer to this Everton team.
However, given how well Digne has performed thus far, it is not surprising to see the Frenchman come out on top in the poll and, should Silva start him next game, his inclusion would have undoubtedly been a deserved one.
